Other Law-Related Programs in the Toronto Area Leading to Degrees and Diplomas

York University:

M.A. in interdisciplinary studies permits students to propose and complete courses and a thesis which, depending on their interests, can link law with other areas. Graduate Diploma in Justice System Administration This programme of study allows students in appropriate graduate programmes at York University to specialise formally in the area of Justice System Administration, and to be awarded a Graduate Diploma in Justice Administration. The Diploma is awarded concurrently with the Master's or Doctoral Degree for which the student is registered. Students can only receive the Diploma if they successfully complete their graduate degree programme. The programme is geared to students who aspire to leadership positions in the justice system. Osgoode Hall Law School (the Faculty of Law) admits one in ten applicants for three years of full-time study leading to the LL.B. degree. Most applicants have an undergraduate degree before entry and all applicants must write the LSAT (Law School Admission Test) given several times each year. In order to practice law in Ontario, a law school graduate must article for one year with a lawyer or government law department, and complete a further four months of training and practice-related courses given by the Law Society of Upper Canada. A Certificate in Practical Ethics may be earned by Faculty of Arts students, in addition to their undergraduate degree. Information available from Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Arts, Room S428, Ross Building.

A General Certificate in Refugee and Migration Studies may be earned by Faculty of Arts students. There is a graduate diploma programme in refugee and migration studies. Information available from the Centre for Refugee Studies, 322 York Lanes.

University degree programmes in other institutions:

University of Toronto offers degrees in law and an interdisciplinary degree programme at the undergraduate and graduate level in criminology. Further information: Centre of Criminology, 416-978-7124, and Woodsworth College, 416-978-2411.

Carleton University, Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Law offers an undergraduate honours BA and a Master's degree in Legal Studies designed for students with a strong academic background in a range of disciplines, including sociology, law, political science and history, who are interested in developing a critical understanding of law. Formal training in law is not a prerequisite for admission. Law-related careers and jobs are also available at various levels of government. For example, the police forces at the national, provincial, regional and municipal level now hire university graduates. Both the federal and provincial departments responsible for the justice system hire probation and parole officers and court clerks. Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology, School of Legal and Public Administration, 1750 Finch Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario, M2J 2X5, telephone 416-491-5050. The college offers diplomas in law-related programmes, open to university and high school graduates. The programmes provide training for direct entry to a number of occupational areas in fields of law.

Building Construction Regulations Administration Programme trains professional building code advisors for the construction industry, and equips students to manage regulatory compliance and to be cognizant of the laws governing building construction in Ontario.

Court and Tribunal Administration Programme trains professional administrators who work with judicial officials to manage court facilities and staff and to assist in the administration of justice. This is a two year diploma programme with a field placement component.

Court and Tribunal Agent Programme trains independent agents who offer certain specified legal services to the public, but are not supervised by lawyers. The type of work that such an agent may undertake is limited by law. This is a two year programme.

Information Project Researcher Post-Diploma Certificate Programme which requires a degree or diploma for admission, will train people in the skills necessary to design, market and conduct information projects using information databases with a focus on the legal regulatory context. It is a one-year programme.

Legal Assistant Programme prepares students to assist lawyers in private law offices and legal departments in government and industry. Often a legal assistant performs many tasks otherwise performed by lawyers. This is a two year diploma programme with a field placement component.

Mortgage Broker Programme requires a degree or college diploma for admission and trains students to become mortgage brokers. Graduation from the programme is a prerequisite to registration as a mortgage broker under the Ontario Mortgage Brokers Act.

Real Property Administration Programme prepares for careers in real estate assessment, appraisal and management. This is a two year programme with a field placement component.

Regulatory Law Administration Programme requires a BA for admission and equips students to administer client files and mandate regulatory compliance programmes in regulatory agencies. This is a one year programme with a field placement component.

Legal Assistant Programme prepares law clerks to undertake routine legal matters and administrative procedures, including real estate, civil litigation, family law. There is a strong placement component to this two year diploma programme.

Office Administration - Legal provides training for advanced secretarial or administrative support positions, including microcomputers, legal documents, office technology. This is a two year diploma programme.

Correctional Workers Programme teaches theory and practical techniques for working with young and adult offenders and includes society's approach to corrections, security techniques and equipment. There is work experience included in this two year programme.

Law and Security Administration Programme This is a two-year diploma programme, which prepares students for careers in public and private policing, corrections, customs and immigration. Instruction includes courses in investigative techniques, crisis intervention, correctional practices, psychology, etc.
There is a field placement component in one of the above-named five areas of law enforcement.

Police Foundations Programme

Advanced Justice Studies This is a continuing education programme, designed for those persons currently in the field, as well as for those who aspire to work in law enforcement.
