My areas of interest are memories of atrocities and injustice and the way they shape the notion of citizenship for marginalized groups, critical studies of human rights, genocide and crimes against humanity, the relationship between nationalism and minority rights in the Balkans and the Middle East, forced migration, and debates on ethics in international law pertaining to mass political violence. I have supervised graduate work on minority rights in the Middle East, Muslim diasporas in Europe and Canada, genocide and societal amnesia, and chronic abuses of human rights of migrants and refugees. I am cross-listed with SPT graduate programme at York, and supervise graduate work at Osgoode Hall Law School, as well.
I taught courses on religion and politics, nationalism and political violence, international migration and diaspora studies, human rights, and, theories of justice. Before joining the York University Department of Political Science, I worked at Bogazici and Bilgi Universities in Istanbul, Turkey, University of London and London School of Economics in the UK, and State University of New York at Binghamton in the USA. At York, I am affiliated with the Center for Refugee Studies, Center for Jewish Studies, YCISS, Center for German and European Studies, and, Center for Practical Ethics. I am a member of the executive boards of CRS and YCISS. I am also on the executive board of the Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK and an editorial board member of Nations and Nationalism. I act as a referee for Southeast European Politics and Society, Journal of Refugee Studies, International Migration Studies, Citizenship Studies and Ethnic and Racial Studies.
I am married and have two young children, Josef and Ezra. I live partly in Toronto and partly in Istanbul, Turkey and divide my year writing in two languages, as well. Between 1996 and 2005, I held adjunct positions at Bogazici University and in 2006, I became affiliated with Bilgi University Law School, Center for Human Rights in Istanbul, Turkey. I also sing at the Toronto Jewish Choir and when I have time, do sketches and carvings of the human figure.
