Current Research

Shannon Bell’s current research interest is Fast Bodies and Cyber Humans which, in part, is an interactive examination of robotic consciousness and the tissue engineered body.

Fast feminism (a new site of feminist scholarship) is based on the mesh or blend of pornography, philosophy and politics and is driven by speed theory. The bodies at the core of the Fast Feminist book are flesh derivatives: the phallic mother, the sadean woman, Deleuze and Guattari’s little girl, Bataille’s female Don Juan, gone hyper, doing gender as escape velocity from socially sanctioned woman.

My four books have thus far been on aspects of alternative sexualities: prostitution, pornography, sadomasochism, transsexuality, pedophilia, and female ejaculation. The books include: Reading, Writing, and Rewriting the Prostitute Body, Whore Carnival, Bad Attitude\s on Trial, and Fast Feminism.

Fast Bodies and Cyber Humans is a redirection of my research, work, and interest away from the flesh body to cybernetics (the functional merging of the flesh body and technology) and the cyborg body. Fast Bodies and Cyber Humans probes the alteration in human emotions through the interactivity of human intelligence (HI) and artificial intelligence (AI), and what this alteration means in terms of the interactive emotions of intimacy, love, anger and violence; it pursues the relationship between Buddhism and Artificial Life (AL). Chapters will include: 1. First Cyborg/Last Human, 2. Grow Me a Friend – Tissue Engineering East and West; 3. Robots are Melodramatic, 4. Cyber Neo-Cannibalism.
