Upcoming Seminars

A series of seminars at York will be taking place under the title "The Comparative Political Economy Seminar Series".

The next seminar will be held on Friday March 26 at 2:30 p.m in the Verney Room: Etienne Cantin will be discussing the American system of industrial relations, and historical trends in the relationship between the working class and the state.

Upcoming Chair's Roundtable entitled "Unprotected Workers and Global Politics"
The roundtable will take place at 2:30 PM on Monday, March 22, in the Verney Room.

The confirmed panelists are Isa Bakker, who will chair, and Matt Davies of York University; Jeffrey Harrod of the International School for Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Amsterdam; Marlea Clarke of York University and is the Research Associate at the Institute of Development and Labour Law, University of Cape Town; and Mustapha Kamal Pasha of the School of International Service, American University in Washington DC.

The roundtable is organized around a discussion of the "power and production" approach to international political economy, initially formulated in the 1987 volumes written by Robert Cox (Production, Power, and World Order) and Jeffrey Harrod (Power, Production, and the Unprotected Worker). We are especially focusing on the neglected part of the analytical framework formulated by Harrod in his contribution in order to see how patters of power relations amongst workers who do not enjoy the relative protections of trade unions, economic privilege or of the state help constitute global political economic power relations. We are also going to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of this approach, and how it might be reformulated today in light of changes in the global political economy since the original books were published.
